Encounter vs Skirmish vs Brush

Encounter, skirmish, brush.

In their military senses (compare BATTLE ), an encounter is a sudden hostile meeting that is typically both violent and unexpected; a skirmish, a slight and desultory, often preliminary, encounter, commonly between light detachments of troops; a brush, a short but brisk skirmish. All three words are used of other than military contests.
