Difference between Mean and Median

Mean is the sum of all numbers in a group divided by the number of figures. It is commonly called the average.

  • The arithmetic mean of 1, 5, and 6 is (1 + 5 + 6) ÷ 3 = 4.

Median is the midpoint of a range of numbers. To find a median, write the numbers in order from largest to smallest. The figure with the same number of figures above and below is the median.

  • The median of 12, 19, 23, 45, and 60 is 23.
