Dominant vs Predominant vs Paramount vs Preponderant vs Preponderating vs Sovereign

Dominant, predominant, paramount, preponderant, preponderating, sovereign mean superior to all others in power, influence, position, or rank.

Something is dominant which is thought of as ruling, as commanding, or as uppermost.

Something is predominant which is for the time being in the ascendant or exerts the most marked influence.

Something is paramount which has preeminence or supremacy in importance, order, rank, or jurisdiction.

Something is preponderant or preponderating which outweighs or overbalances every other thing of its kind in power, influence, force, or number; these terms are commonly used without clear distinction in meaning, but preponderating sometimes suggests active operation and preponderant the actual effect.

Something is sovereign (see also FREE) when every other comparable thing is subordinate, inferior, or of lower value; the term therefore imputes unquestioned supremacy to the thing so described.
